Yahoo Messenger Voice Chat doesn't work

OK this little problem is driving me a bit nuts. Yahoo! Messenger voice chat does not work. My wife's computer and my computer are having the same problem. Here's what I've learned so far:

When I click the "TALK" button in the chat window I get the following dialog box, VOICE ERROR "Trouble communicating with the voice server. Attempting to reconnect..." I click on OK and nothing seems to happen.


My system

Dell Dimension 4600 purchased 1/2004
256Mb RAM
40Gb HD
Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection
SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio
Windows XP Pro
Logitech Clicksmart 310
Yahoo Messenger v5.6.0.1358


My wife's system

Dell Dimension 2400 purchased 1/2004
128Mb RAM
40Gb HD
Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection
SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio
Windows XP
Logitech Messenger Camera ???
Yahoo Messenger v5.6.0.1358
(sometimes she can voice chat)

Network

-Mototola SurfBoard cable modem
-Linksys BEFSR41 router


NOTE: Yahoo voice chat works great on the kids older computers (on the same network) loaded with Windows 98 and Windows ME!



I've done the following:

-Reconfigured the router to open ports 5000-5010 and port 5100 (for Yahoo SuperCAM)
-Turned off the computer's firewall
-Reinstalled the sound drivers
-Reinstalled Yahoo Messenger
(including deleting the entire Yahoo folder)
-Ran DXDIAG and turned off "Hardware sound acceleration level", ran the diagnostics and returned the level back to full (it;s been back set to all levels many times during my testing)
-Yahoo! Audio Setup Wizard "Step 4 of 5: Connection" passes, Conference test sounds OK, but if I hold the TEST button down for too long I get what sounds like sleigh bells that fade in and out along with my voice. Before running DXDIAG it used to sound like a lion roaring and I couldn't hear my voice play back.
-Web cam works fine. Although, I don't think SuperCam is working, but I haven't spent much time looking into it.
-Microphone and speakers work great in all other applications that I've tried them in.

After researching all this for hours, I still do not have voice chat working on the new computers. Voice works great on the kids computers so I know the router and ISP are not involved. Yahoo audio test "connection test" passes on the new computers so I'm pretty sure all the network stuff is good.

I've been reading notes on the RTCDLL.DLL file for MSN Messenger, but I'm not sure if they apply to Y!M.

I'm suspecting I have a driver problem of some sort but I don't know for sure. Any help you can offer would be fantastic.

If the audio set up wizard for yahoo says that your voice is working properly then I suspect its just Yahoo , If a driver was affected you wouldnt get any sounds at all.

I'm not familiar with the Dell's sound card features but if your PC has some form of digital echo/karaoke feature try disabling it... most of the time, most new PC sound cards have so much digital trash enabled by default that it usually interferes or blocks new software/programs from accessing it.

I've got more information that just confuses me even more than I already am...

When I'm in a Y!M chat room (which is almost never) and I click the "TALK" button everything seems to work just fine. If I'm in a Y! IM window I get the error. If I initiate a private conference or join a private conference I get the error.

In my initial post anywhere I typed "chat" I really meant IM window, and my wife's computer seems to work just fine unless she's IMing with me.

I'd really like to get this resolved, Y!IM has been great for me in the past and I'd like not to have to switch to another IM.

The problem has nothing to do with your computer or your settings. It has to do with messenger not being compatable with XP. I have had XP for about 2 months. At first I could get it to work only with an older version of yahoo. Then that quit and it's not working at all, and hasn't been for weeks. When I go thru the wizard everything works fine. I can voice chat in an IM, just not in a chatroom. Go figure. I went to a yahoo help page and it listed out the operating systems that Messenger is compatable with and XP was not on the list. Yahoo needs to wake up and discover they are losing a lot of customers. If you're interested in trying out an older version of Messenger, go to http://www.freecreed.com and in the search engine type in "messenger archive" and that should get you to the list of other versions.

I've been on the Dell community message board and someone there suggested I might have a problem with the Intel network driver in XP. That seems to make a lot of sense, but, I still can't find a way to corect this problem. I think I might try another NIC which may mean I'll have to disable the on board NIC.

If and when I get this problem resolved, I'll write back and let everyone know what I found.

Yahoo's help system seems to be OK for basic problem solving, but for anything more complicated it's just about useless. It seems to be completely automated with no way to get to tech. support. It's too bad, in some ways, because I really like the services they provide. Will I have to someday switch to Microsoft messenger? AIM is out, I've had a couple bad experiences with AOL and I don't want to deal with their nonsense again.

If anyone's got any other suggestions please let me know. Thanks a lot.

I have spent sooooo much time researching why I can't get sound in the chatrooms. I almost think I'm onto something now...and maybe it is affecting your computers also. If you open Internet Explorer and go to Tools and to Internet Options to Advanced and scroll down to the next thing below HTTP1. Do you have anything there that ends in VM? As in Java Virtual Machine? If not, that could be your problem. I have XP Pro... got it in Jan 2004. If you go to Microsoft's page on Java and check that out, I think that's the problem. As of January, JVM is not available and it's being phased out. So if you have programs that still need it to run, they won't run properly. On that website it talks about downloading Sun Java, which I did in January to get into the old version of yahoo chat. I have my options set to use Sun, but it's not doing the trick. Let me know if you figure your problem out. And good luck!~

I had a similar problem with yahoo voice chat, and it took me 9 months, and 3 mics to finally figure it out I have windows XP Professional..here what I did....

Start, All programs, Entertainment, then Volume Control,under mic, I clicked advanced, there were 2 boxes there check marked,one was 20dBboost,and the other one was,AGC, I unchecked the AGC box.ran the audio wizard, and now I can use yahoo voice chat! I hope this helps for ya, good luck ~TB~
