New Yahoo user. Can't send IM's back!

I kind of started using Yahoo's chat rooms. I am able to receive IM's and send them. This is with the older computer I have. I did not have Yahoo! Messenger on this computer.

But I just bought a laptop. I can receive IM's but when I click on the button (after typing a message) it won't send. I downloaded Messenger thinking that's what the problem was. I can send messages through there. But why can't I send regular IM's instead of through messenger (which I really didn't want anyway). Thanks for all the help.
