Trouble: Yahoo! IM (5,5,0,1244) Offline Messages
I am seeing the Windows 98 message "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor." whenever I try to bring up the Offline Messages under Tools (or if someone has sent me an offline message, which in turn brings up the offline messages box). After the Windows error message appears, the entire program crashes and closes (after clicking on the error message box, which you must do to continue anything).
Anyone know what might be going on? Here are the details: 1. I am using Yahoo! Messenger (5, 5, 0, 1244) and MyYahoo Module (5, 5, 0, 454). Yes, it's an old version, but I am quite happy with it. One thing I like* is that it doesn't automatically delete the offline messages when the offline messages box is closed, it just keeps bringing them up. 2. Using Windows 98. 3. Here is the dump from the Windows error message box: YPAGER caused an invalid page fault in module YPAGER.EXE at 0167:00513723. Registers: EAX=007f1057 CS=0167 EIP=00513723 EFLGS=00010202 EBX=00641be0 SS=016f ESP=007ec5b0 EBP=007ec5b8 ECX=00000415 DS=016f ESI=007f0000 FS=43cf EDX=00000003 ES=016f EDI=00644d80 GS=0000 Bytes at CS:EIP: f3 a5 ff 24 95 3c 38 51 00 8b c7 ba 03 00 00 00 Stack dump: 007ece4c 007edc1c 007ec614 00422707 00641be0 007ece60 000041f7 00641be0 00000000 0000421b 0000015c 007edc1c 00000000 00000038 00514f9f 00000038 4. I have used this version of Yahoo! IM for several years and on this system without making any recent changes whatsoever and without any problems. 5. I tried uninstalling and re-installing the same version, but the problem reappeared, even though I had the problem once before and I believe* I may have tried the reinstall before which seemed to work. 6. The problem is with ONLY ONE ACCOUNT. That is, when I sign into another yahoo account, in the same session (that is, without exiting the Yahoo! IM), I am able to bring up offline messages and view them without any problem. 7. What exactly occurs? Well on selecting the Offline Messages under Tools, it takes a moment for them to come up, but then they will and immediately the Windows error message appears and the Offline Messages are blocked over, not even allowing me to read, delete or do anything. 8. As long as I don't bring up the Offline Messages (and no one has sent me a message), I am able to use IM in the aforementioned problem account without any problem, no errors, no crashing. 9. I do not* use the Message Archive feature under Tools--it is disabled. However, I did try enabling it and this changed nothing, problem still arises. Does anyone have any ideas? Has this ever happened to anyone else? A few other observations which might be helpful: 10. I do not think it has been affected by some sort of virus because when I sign into a different account, I have no problems with the Offline Messages whatsoever. 11. When I was able to last successfully run the Offline Messages with the problem account, my hard disk ran out of space! Ack! I believe this may have been the culprit. However, I have since deleted many large files and now have ample free space and I have performed a re-install, but the problem persists. 12. One last thing was that among the last few Offline Messages sent were links to a photo album from a friend--they were legitimate (not browser crashing or such). I would think this would be unrelated. 13. I'm not sure, but I would estimate the number of Offline Messages in queue is now 40? or so: I have had many* more on the other account without problem. Sorry for the lengthy description, but I wanted to provide as much specific information as possible. Thanks in advance for any help! :-) |

Good to hear from you. Regarding the link, I'm not sure what it could have downloaded or where. I assume the unarchived Offline Messages under Yahoo! IM 5.5 are stored on Yahoo's servers, is this not correct? So I have no way to scan them. I could be wrong, but I'm thinking this is not the case unless someone knows differently. You mention that the number of messages may be the problem and come to think of it, when the problem occurred one other time, it was with the other account I mentioned. After a reinstall? I believe, I was able to access the messages and manually save those which I wanted to keep which made the problem disappear. At the time of the crash, I had several hundred messages stored offline. It's been some time ago--the other account now has only about a dozen messages offline, and there is no problem whatsoever. I did mention in my first post there were only about 40 messages stored offline in the current problem account, but this estimate may be wildly off--it may be many more, now that I think about it, and you could be right, it may be at capacity. How would I delete a few of the messages then and access them once more? I don't use a cell phone presently but will see if I can use a friend's who has internet access. I would like to try other options first though if anyone can think of one. As to Yahoo's discontinuing support for IM 5.x versions soon, you mean you'll not be able to connect to the Yahoo Messenger servers with client versions under 6.0? If so, do you know when this will occur? Thanks. ![]() |

As far as when Yahoo! will discontinue support...that's anyone's guess. They released 6.0 not SO long ago...so you may have some time...but just be prepared that you will have to back up your offlines somewhere else once you upgrade. Even the ones you already have saved and you think should stay there...they won't. I'm sure someone else will think of another way to get into the offlines...but the cellphone was the quickest way I could think of that worked for me.
We'll figure it out one way or another...you've come to the right place.
