Id's with more than 1 underscore were allowed till early 2000 not 1998
There is no Secondary yahoo server but yahoo's servers opted to allow new e-mail address with their partners, att, ameritech, provider, BT amongst others.
Yahoo since then have opted to use OpenID for third party inclusions just using their accounts, Yahoo members will find an OpenID option in their account information.
Whether china and yahoo had a falling out doesn't make the accounts they allowed under their partners illegal nor rare, they were fully authorized accounts by yahoo!
Numbers Are not "illegal" nor "rare" either and where allowed then not allowed then allowed again for yahoo!'s own mobile service and partners with each main account having a account default with "mobile." with amended random numbers added.
None of these accounts were exploits but yahoo allowing them then not.
Fact is yahoo allowed id's at one time and not anymore and the majority of people who use these "rare" id's either cracked them with password crackers or got given them.
Yahoo! having issues with their filter which allow some id's and not others sometimes has issues when they edit or change stuff and some people abuse this, but yahoo just check their logs from the date of the change for newly made id's and deactivate them.
I'm sure people who have had this happen to them know what i'm talking about as i myself have had it happen.
It's not about been "savy" but learning from experience been a yahoo! user since it's inception.
