Yahoo Insider Problem??

The Yahoo Insider always popped up on my screen everytime when I logged in Yahoo messenger, but now it's not anymore. This happened when my Yahoo messenger froze and i tried pressing alt+control+delete but it didnt work so i had to restart my computer..then after that,I logged in the messenger again but it doesn't pop up anymore. Now it's happening on both of my computers..On my other computer, it stopped popping up after i clicked on the advertisement on the Yahoo insider. When this same problem happened before,I scanned in the Ad-Aware program, it worked that time but it's not working this time. But when a lot of people instant message me as soon as I get on the messenger or when I get a bunch of offline messages, it popped up before..Do you think maybe the files might be jammed or something?? But Even when I sign on MSN messenger, the news pop-up thing isn't popping up anymore..What do you think is wrong?? Can anyone help me?

Hello and welcome to BBB! I personally don't like these pop-ups so I don't display them. However, the first thing that pops (no pun intended) to mind is that your browser settings, or an added toolbar in your browser is maybe blocking the pop-ups? Have you checke all your browswer settings to make sure they are allowed? Also, you can add the site names as sites that are OK to display - that might make a difference.

Yes, because the setting was already like that when those pop-ups came out from the yahoo messenger. what do u think might be wrong? do u think maybe the files are jammed or something? when i get a lot of things pop up from yahoo messenger like IMS and Offline Messages, sometimes it pops up but other than that, it doesnt.

Do you think maybe it's a spyware/virus? Does spywares/viruses block those pop-ups or no? But I tried scanning on Ad-Aware and on my Antivirus program but it didn't detect anything.

Since you say you had this problem once before, and a spyware scan with Ad-Aware fixed the problem AND the fact that it's happening with both WLM and YH - makes me think it is spyware or malware related.

When you scanned with Ad-Aware, did you update you definitions and do a full system scan (not a quick scan)? I typically recommend using a 2nd spyware scan as well. I would suggest SuperAntiSpyware which is available on Filehippo. Besides Ad-Aware it's found the most spyware on my machine. Be sure to update the definitions before you scan and to run a complete system scan even though it takes a long time.

When you scanned with your Virus protection, I assume it also had up to date definitions? This is critical when scanning for a potential problem.

Can you also let me know what version of Yahoo you're using, what operating system you have (ex: XP SP2, Vista 32 or 64) and what firewall you have - if it's the Windows firewall, have you made sure that no settings were changed and that Yahoo messenger is completely allowed through?

It will likely take a bit more information to figure this out - but I'm still leaning towards malware as the problem since it's affecting more than one messenger program. Be patient and I'm sure we'll figure it out.

Yes I already updated my definitions and then scanned it..I have XP and using the latest version of Yahoo messenger. Do you think I should reinstall both Yahoo and MSN messenger? It tells me that they have a new version on MSN messenger when I sign in MSN messenger. Should I click on that in order to update it? Would that be the same as uninstalling it and then reinstalling? Do you think that should work or no? And when this first happened, I accidently clicked on some make-up advertisement that was showing on the Yahoo insider and then it just took me to a blank page where it said blank on the address browser as well.

You have a number of points you brought up in your last post so let me address them in the best possible order (I think...).

Before you uninstall or update anything....can you please do the following for me?

On the WLM and YH main menu can you choose Help/About and find the version you are using for both of these programs? Please post that back here. Of course, it's always best to have the latest stable build, but I'm not convinced yet you don't have some spyware or malware that perhaps isn't being picked up by your scans and I want to be 100% sure you need the update it's claiming you do.

As for uninstalling and reinstalling....If I'm correct and there is malware on your machine, uninstalling and reinstalling will not fix the problem. That said, if you're determined to try and get it working right away....uninstalling and reinstalling won't hurt anything either. But if you choose to do so please grab the latest builds from Filehippo so we can be sure you've got clean downloads. I really think this is a bit drastic at this point and probably won't solve the problem at all. If it were just one program I *might* think it would help, but with both exhibiting the same problem - I'm still leaning towards malware.

We'd all like to believe ads are safe to click on, and for the most part, on something like Yahoo it shouldn't be a problem as I'm sure they screen what they put there. However, if some little nasty gets on your machine, you may think you're clicking on a valid ad when you aren't. So my best advice is just to be cautions when doing so. You can't worry about every ad, and certainly not ones showing in a window you trust - but getting a blank screen when you did it makes me suspicious of it for sure. And certainly if someone you don't know sends links via IM don't click them - be extremely cautious. Even if you get one from a friend, if you have any doubts, stop and ask them before clicking on it.

Now...back to the actual problem. In addition to telling me which versions of YH and WLM you have. I'd like you to please grab HiJack This from the same Filehippo website. After you've installed it, make sure your browser is closed, and run it, choosing the save a logfile option. It will then scan your machine and open up a report in notepad. Please COPY and PASTE it in a PM to me. It may take more than 1 PM to get the whole thing but I need the entire log. Please DO NOT attach a file, I won't open it - it needs to be pasted into the PM for me. I'll take a look at it and see if I notice anything that seems out of place in the HJT log.

We may still need to try one other thing before I would really go for an uninstall and reinstall of either program but lets start with this. Be patient we'll work it out.
