My computer locks up when using the Yahoo messenger

I am a new member to the forum. I use Yahoo messager . It seems like every time I use the program my computer locked a and I have to reboot it. I have Windows XP and often times have several windows open at one time working on different computer things could this be the problem why my computer locks up when using Yahoo messenger. I would appreciate any tips concerning this matter.
Thanks,

Most likely, you have one of two possible problems.
1) Messenger is corrupted: Fix it by deleting the program using Add/Delete Programs in Control Panel then download and reinstall a new version with all other windows applications closed.

2) One of the other applications you have open is corrupted or doesn't like working with Messenger. By process of elimination, see if you can find out which one may be causing the problem. If you find it, delete and reinstall the program then make sure all updates are downloaded. If you have identified the offending application and reinstalling doesn't fix it, send a complaint to the manufacturer. They might have a fix.

A good cleanup to be sure you are free of spyware, malware and viruses is a good place to start.

Run a complete virus scan with up to date definitions, as well as using 2 separate spyware scanners (also with updated definitions.) A registry cleanup with something like CCleaner is also a good idea when doing a thorough clean.

If you still experience the lock ups (especially when you have multiple windows open) be sure you have the latest version of Java and Flash installed on your machine. If you happen to have the AOL software (not AIM, but the full AOL software suite) installed, I've found it can cause all kinds of lock up problems.

Finally, you can go to control panel/administrative tools/event logs and possibly find some information about what is happening at the time you lock up. I can't promise that will yield any results but it's possible.

Do you also experience this problem when you don't have Yahoo Messenger open? Or is it only when you have the IM client open?
