Yahoo Messenger Random Hang On

I'm facing a problem that gives to me a lot of headaches.
The manifests goes like that:

messenger start normaly, log in goes ok, everything is functional, but sometimes (10-20 per day) it hang on

the messenger's start window don't get more repainting, remains empty (all white)
the conversation windows are blocked, can't do anything . if I'm trying to access them they manifest like start windows, goes white.

things that i have discovered are:

if I execute right click on the systray icon then appear the popup menu of the task bar and all messages that comes to me since mess hanged appear in right corner.

sometimes mess hangs whet I push left arrow during conversation.

almost all the times it hangs when I'm browsing, or something else. May be mess is an soft that need more attention.

Whatever, the joking spirit is cause by hope that I will find her a solution for the problem that torture me over an year.

THANKS!

Hello and welcome to BBB! Let's find out some basic information first.

1. What operating system are you using? (XP or Vista) Please include the service pack number for what you have installed.

2. What version of Yahoo are you using?

3. Do you have the latest versions of Flash and Java installed?

4. What antivirus solution are you using?

5. Have you run a detailed scan for malware? If so, what program did you use to do this?

6 .Most importantly, are you having problems or strange behavior with any other programs on this machine - or is it entirely related to Yahoo Messenger?

I'll be glad to try and help you out, but we really need more information to be able to accurately assist you.

Thanks for post.

1. XP SP2
2. Yahoo Messenger 9.0.0.2162
3. Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX/Plugin. Don't have Java. I'll install latest version of Flash/Java.
4. ESET NOD32 Antivirus, v 4.0.314.0
5. Didn't run scan for malware. May be you can suggest one.
6. Other software don't bother me. Only messenger.

One thing that may be can help is that I've installed XP 1,5 year ago and make image to partition. From that image I've restored the partition. So basic system is the same excepting antivirus, messenger and may be updates tu Flash.

If you haven't been scanning for malware let's start with that. If nothing else it will help us know that is not part of the problem.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location in case you need it for future reference.

As for Java:
You should update your version of the Sun Java Platform (JRE) to the newest version:
  • Download the latest JRE version at the Sun Microsystem's website
  • Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16 and click Download button
  • Check the box that says: Accept License Agreement
  • Under the Windows Platform - Java (TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 16 section, click on the link to download the Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Next, remove all older versions of the Sun Java Platform using the Control Panel's Add/Remove Program feature (as they may contain security vulnerabilities).
  • Reboot your system
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version of the Sun Java Platform

After you have done these steps, please test Yahoo Messenger and see if the problem persists. Let me know.

Also update NOD32 since there's been a few updates for it. Sounds like something's screwing with Messenger in a bad way.

Please let us know if the problem still exists. There are other steps we can move on to if needed.

It is a great idea to scan with Malwarebytes periodically. I typically update it and do a quick scan once a week just to be sure things stay clean. Always be sure to update your definitions before running it.

We'll wait to hear more - I'm crossing my fingers for you!!

Actually problem persist. I don't think there's about malware.
Can you recomend a place to download latest flash?
What other steps I can take to solve my problem?

Flash 10.0.32.18

NOD32 4.0.437 (this is newer than your version)

You said you restored from the recovery partition? Did you do that to try and solve this problem? Or was there something else that happened that caused you to restore? After you did that did you apply all your Windows updates?

I noticed you said it will hang when you are browsing the internet. Are you by any chance running any software that blocks pop ups?

I restored partition because it's much faster than install xp and all drivers and soft.
I didn't apply updates to windows
I have NOD32 4.0.314
For browsing I use Mozila 3.03.13
About pop ups I can't say if I have any blockers.
