Microphone Volume problem in Yahoo Messenger

I Have messenger 9 and I have a very frustrating problem with the microphone volume. I'm working off of a Toshiba Satellite laptop with Vista. I plug the mic and headphones right into the front. My friend hears me at first but the more we talk, the more the volume goes down until she can't even hear me anymore. The computer won't allow me to turn the volume back up while messenger is running so I have to close it, turn the volume back up and then restart messenger. Once again being able to talk for about 10 minutes before the volume is all the way down again. I've tried three different mics. I've installed an audio amigo usb sound card and plugged the mic into that but got the exact same problem. I've also tried using my desktop computer that is running XP and got the same problem. Is there any way around this? Is there any way to set the volume of the mic so that it stays in one place and doesn't change? I saw someone having a similar problem problem with Skype Automatic mic volume adjustment - can't i turn it off?? - Skype Community that problem seemed to be triggered by loud sounds, mine doesn't but it is similar. Is there a similar fix for yahoo messenger?
Thanks,
Justin

Hello and welcome to BBB! Since you have more than one machine available to you, I'd suggest upgrading one of them to the beta 10 version and seeing if that helps the problem.

I have seen a similar problem with Windows Live Messenger. The only solution I've see (and it does not work for everyone) is to go to Control Panel / Sounds & Audio Devices and minimize the window before starting a voice chat. If it is open first some people are able to adjust the volume back up in the sound settings directly.

Perhaps one of the Yahoo gurus will have more advice on this one.
