Deleted contacts popping up as "is online"

Version 9 here on a new installation of Windows 7.

I thought this problem would go away on a new OS install (fresh). What is happening is contacts that I used to have in my friends list that have been deleted, or people that have yahoo email addresses that I've never added to my friends list but are in my contacts are showing up in the "is online/offline" popups.

I'm not so concerned abou the people in the contacts, but I don't want deleted contacts to appear. How can I fix this?

Thanks

No, re-installing an OS won't fix this since contacts are server-side. Did you remove the user from your address book contacts?

Yes.. For some popups, the user was never in the contacts in the first place.

That's rather odd. Maybe their ID(s) wasn't removed from your list server-side?
