Two instances of YahooMessenger.exe in Windows Task Manager processes

For some reason ever since I updated to the newest version of Yahoo, when I view the processes list in Windows Task Manager, it shows two instances of YahooMessenger.exe running. One always has higher mem usage than the other. If I end the proceess of the one with the least memory, Yahoo continues running normally, but if I end the higher one, the program quits.

Any idea why two would be running at the same time? I've never had this happen before.

I'm running XP pro, and have no reason to believe that my machine is compromised in any way.

The same thing is happening to me. I'm also on XP Pro and I keep having to shut down the Yahoo process that's taking up the least memory.

I found this on another site. It works temporarily, but seems to be no better than the method we're already using. To get to the place that's mentioned in the quote, you can click on the mail icon at the top right of the Messenger program.

"There's a messenger app on your mail page, so maybe that's it. You can go to Mail and click on the arrow in the upper left/hand corner, along side your name, scroll to Sign Out of Messenger and see if that gets rid of the second messenger in task mgr."

This is intended and all Yahoo Messenger 11 and 11.5 builds have 2 YahooMessenger.exe processes.

Don't be alarmed by it as it is intended to be like this and one is a Helper process that Yahoo added some time ago.

Step1: click on start, click run, type "regedit" and click ok( without quotes) idea is to open registry editor.

Step2: locate registry value ->HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Yahoo\pager. for those of you who are not sure how to get there, follow these...
after registry editor is open click on "+" sign in front of "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" and look for "Software" and click on "+" infront of software then locate "Yahoo" and click on "+" sign again, locate folder called "pager" and for last time click on "+" sign.

Step3: right click "pager" folder and then select "new" and then "key" this will create a new fold at the bottom, type in any name for this new folder ( in this registry patch as you can see its named "Test".

Step4: now right click on newly created folder and select "new" and then "DWORD Value" this will create a new white and blue file looking thing in right hand side veiw window of reistry editor, name it "Plural" (remember no quotes).

Step5: double click "Plural" to open it and in Value data field type in "1" ( number One) and make sure hexadecimal is selected.

Step6: Click "ok" close registry editor and have fun. YOU ARE DONE...
if followed properly should not take more than one min to do it. TRy it out and its done... good luck
