AOL AIM Messenger Center
[ discussion forum ]Gaia Online launches AIM-powered instant messenger
By integrating AIM functionality within Gaia’s online community, GIM will provide a new interactive experience for Gaia members to connect with each other. With over 7 million active members, Gaia continuously looks for new and innovative ways like GIM to drive further engagement within the community. Gaia recently released the new feature and visitors are already sending over 2 million instant messages each day via GIM.
“Accessible communication tools are essential to providing an interactive experience for online teen and young adult audiences,” said Prakash Ramamurthy, VP of Product Management and Engineering at Gaia Online. “By leveraging AOL’s AIM service we’re able to provide Gaians with the tools to find friends and meet up in the community to watch movies, play games, or simply chat with each other much easier than before.”
Gaia developed GIM using the freely-available APIs provided by AOL’s Open AIM program, which enables developers to easily integrate AIM functionality into their websites and applications. No download is required to use GIM and the application appears in a separate web browser.
Members can message each other individually, as well as participate in fully interactive group messaging sessions in GIM. In addition, GIM enables users to teleport to wherever their friends are within the website. By integrating AIM into Gaia, members have more ways to engage and interact within the larger Gaia community.
For more information about the new GIM feature on Gaia, visit www.gaiaonline.com.

AIM Advanced {FB} Beta Release
Hello Everyone,I have been working on and off on a plugin of mine called AIM Advanced which adds a ton of cool new features to AIM, started it and finished up a lot in mid Feb. but unfortunately, I have only recently been able to finish up a proper installation app. and testing. Originally, I started it as a plugin for a few friends with the first feature being my "Fight Bot" in an attempt to add a better alternative to aim fight. But now I have decided to let everyone enjoy the laughter as there may be plenty of people who would enjoy this and a lot more of the features I have developed.
Above is a screen shot of the FightBot feature which I have developed, more info can be found here or at my storage site at tuankoi.com.
Anyways, I like this site and what I've read and I am looking forward to contributing much more interesting work for the aim community, and I hope you also enjoy the plugin :)
AOL expands to Mexico
AOL has a spotty history of expanding into other countries. In the past, they have expanded and withdrawn from several markets after failing to build adequate market share. Part of the difficulty in the past was their focus on the ISP market. Today, they make the move more as a pure portal rather than an ISP.
Yahoo already has a Mexican version of their popular portal (http://mx.yahoo.com/), as does MSN (http://prodigy.msn.com/).
Will AOL's new entry make a dent in the Mexican web market? Possbily, but only if they can build strong partnerships with already popular Mexican media.

Poynt local search reaches AIM
Canadian-based Multiplied Media Corporation has launched an AIM-compatible version of their Poynt local search service. Previously available only on Windows Live Messenger, Poynt is an IM bot that lets you search for local businesses using your favorite instant messaging program (as long as your favorite is WLM or AIM).Poynt delivers the full listings from Superpages.com, the publisher of Verizon's Yellow Page directory. To use the service, just add the screen name 'Poynt' to your buddy list and send it a message.
Poynt will ask you to specify your search locale, enter keywords for the business or service you need and send the results via IM (listed by proximity).
Gmail Chat adds AIM integration
It's been nearly two years since Google acquired a 5% stake in AOL. The promise then was that Google Talk would allow connectivity to the AIM network. Well, two years later that promised AIM integration is finally here. It is not in Google Talk, but in the web-based sibling, Gmail Chat.Beta testing of the AIM integration began last month, and now they are officially rolling it out for the English-language Gmail interface.
This isn't true integration. You won't be able to use your Google account to chat with your AIM buddies. Instead, this works similar to Meebo. You must have an AIM account (available for free). You can sign-on to your AIM account by clicking the new Options link at the bottom of your Gmail chat list. You supply your AIM username and password in a pop-up window, and when you're connected, your AIM contacts will now appear in your chat list, designated by the familiar AIM running man logo.

Once you've signed in, Gmail Chat will remember your AIM account information. Next time you sign in to Gmail, you'll automatically be reconnected to AIM.
Of course, Yahoo Messenger and WLM Messenger offer true interoperability, and have done so for the past 18 months. But with the popularity of Meebo and programs like Trillian and Adium, do the battle lines still matter?
