Nimbuzz Adds 3G VoIP to iPhone

March 19, 2009 by Jeff Hester

nimbuzz-logoNimbuzz today released an update to their VoIP application for the iPhone. The new version adds the ability to make VoIP calls to landlines and mobiels via Skype-Out and Nimbuzz’s major SIP partners, including Gizmo5 and SIPgate. Nimbuzz also works on an iPod Touch via wifi, essentially turning it into a VoIP phone.

iPhone users can also make VoIP connections without wifi over the 3G network using Nimbuzz Dial-up VoIP. This makes international calls much cheaper, by allowing you to dial a local number, then connecting internationally to over 50 countries.

Also in this version — Nimbuzz now allows you to post Twitter updates, making it a well-rounded, all-purpose communicator.

You do realize this isn’t really voip over 3G, right? You make a regular phone call, and then THAT gets routed using voip to the end destination. I guess it work work, but sounds masochistic.

Using Nimbuzz and Vopium.com from last 4 months on Nokia and these VoIP services cut down my mobile billing expenses up to 80% i think it’s time to switch on to iPhone now.

  3. Jeff Hester says:

Mark, no it’s not technically VoIP over 3G, but it does achieve the same thing. I’m pretty sure AT&T would have a clause preventing VoIP over their data network (effectively and completely circumventing a considerable source of revenue).

  4. JabbaJaw says:

That had to happen because voip systems are starting to replace old telephony companies because it's much cheaper and it practically offers the same services.
